Husbandís Notes...

Notes:
In 1850, workmen in Wright"s carriageshop were: John James, John Wright (brother of the
owner), Charles Collins (brothr -in-law of the owner) David Powers, William H.Bolton, John G.
Pavey, Tom Proctor, John Elliott, and Jim Barlow; the blacksmith was George Fry. In the Civil
War the shop was burned by Yankee soldiers.I

John G. Pave' was a French Hugenot. The Pave's were part of a group of perhaps fifteen to
twenty French families that had fled to this country after the revocation of the Edict of (C)artes.
This particular group of Frenchmen settled in the valley of the Mattaponi River in Caroline
County in an area which came to be known as Pickette's Fork, smetimes seen spelled as
Pickadee's Fork. The specific location is on Route 721, approx 7 miles N.W. of Sparta in
Caroline County. Yhe Postoffice which is now abandoned was known as "DeJarnette PO"
Among these French families were the Pavys, the Picardattes, Chenaults, DeJarnettes and others.

In 1850 , John's mother and father were living with them. John Self, occupation harnessmaker
and Wm. Covington blacksmith, were also resideing with John G. Pavy.

"Feb. 28, 1852 recored in Caroline Co. at Bowling Green is a deed & deed of trust, for 13-1/2
acres on the Milford Road for John G. Pavy and Jane Ann Madison Pavy, his wife.

From 1854 through 1858 various actions of a Board of Trustees formed for the purpose of
purchasing land and for the construction of a Methodist Episcopal Church at Bowling Green are
recorded. John G. Pavy was a member of this board. It is apparent from the entries that no
construction ensued and in 1858 the land was sold. On Jan 18, 1858 the 13-1/2 acres belonging
to the the Pavys was sold at auction to a William Wright.
John Pavy was a Coachman by trade, and later census information lists him as a Wheelwright.
He served the Confederate State of American 1861-1865 with Thorton's Company Va. Light
Artillery. This information is recorded on his tombstone which is of a Government Military
type. He is buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Bowling Green, Va. Jane Madison Pavy died
sometime prior to 1880; at that census John G. Pavy is listed as a Widower, liveing with his son
James Pavy. He was 3 years younger than his wife. ( The 1850 Census says "born 1817, aged 33
years and Jane - born 1814, aged 36 years.")

In Caroline County, because of the developement of the Military reservation ( Camp A.P. Hill)
during the second World War, numerous family cemeteries and private burial grounds were
disinterred, removed and reburied (unmarked grave) in other locations. This is what happend to
Jane Ann Madison Pavy and she is now buried (unmarked grave) in Lakewood Cemetery in the
same section as her husband. From what I coul ascertain from the Manns Funeral Home at
Bowling Green, they are very likely both buried in the one grave which is marked with his
marker." (information from a letter written by Mrs. Henry J. Jefferies ( Mary Barlow Banks))
In 1871, workers at "Shepherd's Hill" were John G. Pavey, B. H. Smoot (for plank) & James E.
Garrett (hauling plank).

In 1888 Bowling Green made its first appearance in a Virginia Business Directory, Carriage
Maker John S. Pavey was listed. In 1888 Coach and Wagon makers: Elliott & Barlow, J.G.
Pavey, & William Wright are listed. They were again listed in 1890.

There is a marker at the Lakewood Cemetery, Bowling Green Va. that states John G. Pavy,
Thorton's Co., Va., L. Arty., C.S.A.
